Mathematics & Mathematical Literacy

The importance of a good Mathematics education in South Africa is continually being brought to our attention in the media. There is little doubt that those who achieve a good Matric pass in Mathematics do have more opportunities available to them than those who do not. The Mathematics Department at Waterfall College continue to do their best to ensure that all our students achieve their potential in this subject.

Mathematical Literacy continues to offer an excellent alternative for those who find Core Mathematics a challenge. It is an ideal subject for lateral thinkers as it covers sections such as map work, ratios, proportions, financial maths, scale, data handling and annuities.

Advanced Programme Mathematics is offered to students in Grade 10, 11 and 12. This is a very demanding subject but offers a good foundation to the subject at university level and is also a useful subject when applying for scholarships or bursaries.

Waterfall College participates annually in the Harmony Gold Mathematics Olympiad, along with thousands of school children across the country. The experience serves to develop mathematical skills and to challenge our students to solve mathematical problems that are not part of the normal school curriculum.
